Jack Rowberry - Voodoo Rooms, 28th October 2022
"Once awarded best Acoustic Act in Scotland (SAMA), Jack now hits the stage with his full band, raising his bar in a new sound by bringing elegant guitar grooves and relatable vocals together.
Having recently worked with producer, Lewis Jones (Elton John, Mick Jagger, Disney and Marvel Studios) at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, Jack is pacing the way to a future release in 2022.
His sound is Blues/Rock with a Scottish tone and just a hint of Americana with strong female backing bringing some extra soul."
I was delighted to be invited to Jack Rowberry's recent gig in Edinburgh, returning after a long absence from the city's vibrant music scene. As a new listener, I was keen to discover what this artist had up his sleeve as we await his new releases.
Playing a mix of old and new material (along with some covers of beloved classics), the setlist was well balanced to entertain old fans of Jack's music as well as new listeners like myself. The fact that line up was stripped back really added to the pleasing intimate vibe of Voodoo Rooms' Cabaret Bar.
While there was a warm response for the older material, it was clear to me how much Jack has developed as a songwriter since these songs were first released. The new material feels more innovative and has a mature writing style more fitting his voice.
The band's performance was outstanding as well. Gorgeous fiddle and harmonies from Jaynie Bo, understated yet superb keys and guitar from Stewart Sands, and providing the subtle groove underneath it all was five string bassist Bruce Thomson. Their energy onstage is comfortable and friendly which again added to the cosy atmosphere that enveloped the packed room that Friday night in October.
I for one am excited to hear what these talented individuals have cooked up in the world famous Abbey Road Studio (due for release next year).
